an interview study

Kia ora and welcome

We are doing a final round of interviews in 2025, with women and nonbinary folk about their experiences of ‘rough sex’. The focus of the study is on experiences with men that were unwanted and/or unenjoyed.

If you are interested in being interviewed, or know someone else who might be, you can find more information here about the study, and what taking part involves. We have a detailed information sheet, which explains what the interviews are about, what we do with the interviews, and how we look after the research data. You can also read our consent form, which sets out what you would be agreeing to if you choose to take part in the research. The interviews have a semi-structured conversational tone, but we also ask a few demographic questions to provide some context for participants’ stories. We’ve included the brief questionnaire we use for that, so you can see what we ask.

So far, we have spoken with women with a wide range of different experiences. Every interview has contributed important insights, and we look forward to hearing from more women and nonbinary folk about their experiences and views. While this research focuses on unwanted and/or unenjoyed experiences, some women have shared other kinds of experiences as well, and this has also been valuable in helping us understand broader contexts.

If you would like to do an interview or have any questions, please get in touch by email or text 021 080 98930. We are also very happy to chat about what’s involved before you decide, if you are interested but unsure.

While this site is very bare bones now (and deliberately vague, so as not to attract unwanted attention!), we hope to develop it when the research is closer to being finished, so we can share our findings here.

Thank you for your interest in this research,

Nicola Gavey

Information Sheet

Download our “Participant Information Sheet”, which explains more about our interview study, and how we would use your contribution as part of the research.

Consent Form

The consent form sets out what you would be agreeing to if you took part in the study. We ask you to sign the consent form at the start of the interview.

Participant Demographics

Before the interview we collect a few background details (age, ethnicity, sexuality and so on). You can read the questions we ask here – if there were any questions you didn’t want to answer, it would be fine to leave them blank. We go over these at the start of the interview.
